Before determining how many panels you might need, you need to gather some basic information: your average annual electricity usage, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), which can be found on your monthly electric bill.

For an average U.S. home consuming 10,500 kWh annually, and assuming a 400W solar panel with a production ratio of 1.5, the system would require approximately 18 panels.

For an average Canadian home consuming 11,135 kWh annually under similar conditions, about 19 panels would be needed.

How Solar Panel Wattage Affects Your System Size

With these higher-efficiency panels, you can reduce the total number of panels needed compared to lower-wattage models, making them ideal for homes with limited roof space.

For example, a 20-panel system using 400W panels would require roughly 435 square feet of unshaded roof space, while the same system using 500W panels would need about 472 square feet but produce significantly more power.

South-facing roofs are the most efficient for solar energy production, while east- and west-facing roofs may require additional panels to achieve the same output. Shaded areas from trees, chimneys, or neighboring buildings can also impact energy generation.

Planning for Future Energy Demand

Your energy consumption needs are likely to change over time, so it’s important to plan ahead when designing your solar system.
